Hollywood’s freshest faces get their close-up in photographer and stylist Claiborne Swanson Frank‘s new book, Young Hollywood (Assouline; $50). The coffee-table tome, available currently at Michael Kors and through Assouline distribution partners beginning Sept. 1, eloquently captures 60 need-to-know women of Tinseltown’s next generation, from actresses and directors to stylists.
Hot on the heels of her first book, American Beauty, Swanson’s second book was inspired by her move to Los Angeles with her husband in 2012. “When I got to L.A., I thought it was the perfect place to tell a new story, and to do another large body of portrait work, focusing this time on Hollywood,” explained the Vogue alumna. “I am not part of that world at all.”
But it was a story in The Hollywood Reporter that summer that helped her to really hone her focus. “It talked a lot about how actresses in their forties are dominating the blockbusters still. The actresses in their thirties had, and have not, found their way. The question of the article was who is the next generation of Hollywood?” The inspired result is more than 160 pages of portraiture that highlight Hollywood’s up-and-comers to watch, including Ireland Basinger Baldwin, Elisabeth Moss and Riley Keough.

“I felt like this generation was unique, that there are many actresses who were directing and writing and producing,” said Swanson Frank. “I think there are so many girls across industry wearing different hats and I think Lena Dunham led, in many ways, a movement and has inspired so many of these young talents to challenge themselves in different ways beyond just acting and directing or writing and producing.”
Channeling equal parts Old Hollywood and modern glamour, Swanson styled her subjects in both vintage pieces and Michael Kors — a move, in part, inspired by a fall 2012 e-book Swanson Frank shot for the designer. The American designer also wrote the foreword for the book.
“I love this idea of capturing these girls young and hungry and humble as they’re finding their way through Hollywood,” she said of the process. “And really, what is more American than Hollywood?”
