Marvel EntertainmentDisney and Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 has zoomed past the $240 million mark at the international box office, surpassing the total foreign take for fellow Marvel pic Captain America: The First Avenger, which earned $192 million in summer 2011.
Directed by franchise newcomer Shane Black, Iron Man 3 opened overseas late last week, a week ahead of its May 3 North American rollout.

The superhero tentpole, debuting to $198 million internationally, is playing more like a follow-up to last year’s Marvel blockbuster The Avengers, versus a follow-up to Iron Man 2, evidenced by the fact that it surpassed the $185.1 million foreign debut of Avengers. Iron Man 2 debuted to $100 million overseas.
Iron Man 3, returning Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, took in $24.3 million on Tuesday, pushing the film’s foreign total to $242.1 million.
In terms of a territory breakdown, the U.K. leads with a total cume of $24.3 million, followed by Korea ($23.7 million), Mexico ($21.7 million), Australia ($20.7 million), France ($19.5 million), Brazil ($15.7 million), Italy ($13.3 million), Taiwan ($10 million), the Philippines ($8.9 million) and Japan ($8.2 million), among others.
The next big test for Iron Man 3 is China, where the film opens on Wednesday, a holiday.
