Be yourself.
Those are the two words Jason Wu delivered when asked for his advice on how to stand out on Hollywood’s crowded red-carpet landscape. Seems simple enough, but lucky for those who care, he expanded the thought to clear up any lingering questions.
“I work with a lot of actresses, mostly my friends, and we just do it for ourselves. We don’t think about what can happen or what people will think,” relayed Wu on the black carpet at W magazine’s Shooting Stars exhibit debut at the May Company Building in Los Angeles on Friday. “It’s really about if you feel good in the dress. Confidence really shows through.”

It was a confident, overcapacity and at times, very pushy crowd at W‘s exhibit, which was co-hosted by Miley Cyrus (in a white Balmain jumpsuit) and W editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi, presented by Hugo Boss and sponsored by the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Rachel Zoe (in Marc Jacobs), Marina Abramovic, Rose McGowan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jordana Brewster, Hailee Steinfeld, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tia Mowry and Joy Bryant also turned out to check out the oversized prints and video projects curated by Tonchi and featuring the likes of Cyrus, Angelina Jolie and Madonna.
Wu praised Tonchi’s transformation of W during his tenure at the mag, and he also had kind words for Kerry Washington. He designed the Scandal star’s Oscar dress last year, marking his debut on the coveted Academy Awards red carpet.
“That’s always the holy grail,” explained Wu, who admitted he was in L.A. for 24 hours because he’s needed in New York to finish two fall collections (his own and BOSS‘). “I was so happy that Kerry asked me because I have dressed her, literally, since the beginning of my career. She called up the studio and we have been friends ever since. It was really nice that she asked me in a moment when she was about to become a mom. She remains a dear friend. For me, that’s what it’s all about.”
