PicturesAmerican Sniper, Birdman, and Boyhood are among the nominees in the best foreign film category of Italy’s David di Donatello Awards, the country’s version of the Academy Awards. All three films scored Oscar best picture nominations, with Birdman taking home the grand prize.
Also among the five best foreign picture nominees are Canada’s Mommy, which was noticeably snubbed by the Oscars, and France and Brazil’s The Salt of the Earth, which picked up an Oscar nomination in the best documentary category.
Francesco Munzi‘s Black Souls leads the nominations, picking up 16 mentions in total. Mario Martone‘s Leopardi followed with 14. Nanni Moretti‘s My Mother (Mia Madre), which next plays in Cannes, and Gabriele Salvatores‘ The Invisible Boy tied for 10 nominations each.
The nominees for best Italian film and director are the same: Munzi for Black Souls, Saverio Costanzo for Hungry Hearts, Martone for Leopardi, Moretti for Mia Madre, and Ermanno Olmi for Torneranno i prati.
The best European film nominations also include Oscar standouts, including Wild Tales by Damian Szifron and The Theory of Everything by James Marsh. Other nominated films in the category include Locke by Steven Knight, Pride by Matthew Warchus and The Broken Circle Breakdown by Felix van Groeningen.
The awards ceremony will air live on Rai on June 12.
