LONDON — Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger has joined a who’s who of British celebrities urging Scotland to remain part of the U.K. ahead of a historic Sept. 18 independence vote.
The singer signed a letter alongside more than 200 stars from the worlds of film, arts, sports and literature, including 44 BAFTA winners. Other names on the list include Simon Cowell, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Coogan, Patrick Stewart, Judi Dench, Eddie Izzard, Sting and Dominic West.

Addressed to the “Dear Voters of Scotland,” the letter acknowledged that the decision would have a big effect on everyone across the U.K.
“We want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you, and to express our hope that you will vote to renew them. What unites us is much greater than what divides us. Let’s stay together,” it said.
TV historian Dan Snow, who helped organize the letter, will now take it on a tour across the U.K., urging the public to add signatures.

Although opinion polls suggest most Scots will vote against breaking the 307-year union the country has with England, there is still a level of uncertainty, with many still reportedly undecided which way they will go.
While not having signed the letter, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling donated $1.7 million to Stay Together, the official campaign to keep Scotland in the U.K. David Bowie earlier this year at the BRIT Awards relayed his support through Kate Moss, who read out his acceptance speech that declared: “Scotland, stay with us.”
Backers of the pro-independence movement include Sean Connery and Alan Cumming.
