James Franco and filmmaker Gus Van Sant will show at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The “Unfinished” exhibition will showcase two films, Endless Idaho and My Own Private River, both collaborations between Franco and Van Sant.
The two have worked together before, with Franco playing a pivotal role in Van Sant’s Milk. The director showed Franco footage that was shot years before My Own Private Idaho, starring River Phoenix, which didn’t make it into the final cut. Franco opted to use the footage, making two films and playing off the original film name.
In Endless Idaho, outtakes, deleted scenes, alternate takes and behind-the-scenes video were used to create the 12-hour film, and takes a glimpse at the movie-making process.
My Own Private River centers mostly on Phoenix’s Idaho character, Mike. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. composed the score.
The two films are accompanied by eight works by Van Sant.
The exhibit begins Saturday, Feb. 26 and runs through Saturday, April 9.
