BAFTA Scotland’s annual awards ceremony on Sunday saw James McAvoy take home the best actor gong for his turn as a corrupt, drug-taking and alcoholic cop in Filth, adapted from Irvine Welsh’s novel.
The best actress award went to relative newcomer Sophie Kennedy Clark for her performance in Philomena, in which she played the younger version of Judi Dench‘s titular character.

Broadchurch star David Tennant won the TV actor award for BBC drama The Escape Artist, while Shirley Henderson, also one of McAvoy’s co-stars in Filth, scooped the TV actress title for Channel 4’s Southcliffe.
J.J. Abrams gave a video message in which he praised first assistant director Tommy Gormley, who was given an outstanding contribution award.

“I’d like to say three things. One, Bafta Scotland rules. Two, Scotland rules. And three, Tommy Gormley rules,” Abrams said of Gormley, who was recently working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “Tommy Gormley is not just the most incredible first AD I’ve ever seen but is one of the greatest people I’ve ever met.”
