Tracy Letts, Linda Emond and Danny Burstein have joined the cast of James Schamus’ directorial debut Indignation, based on the best-selling novel by Philip Roth.
Logan Lerman and Sarah Gadon already boarded the drama, which is being produced by Anthony Bregman‘s Likely Story and Symbolic Exchange Productions alongside RT Features and X-filme.
Set in 1951, Indignation centers on Marcus Messner (Lerman), the idealistic son of a humble kosher butcher from Newark, N.J. When Marcus leaves for college in Ohio, he finds himself falling for a beautiful but troubled girl (Gadon) and in a dangerous conflict with the school’s administration and its dean (Letts) over the political and sexual culture of the era. Burstein plays Max Messner, Marcus’ father, and Emond plays his mother, Esther Messner. Schamus, the former head of Focus Features, adapted the screenplay.
Bregman and Schamus are producing with Rodrigo Texeira. Stefanie Azpiazu, Avy Eschenasy, Lourenco Sant’Anna, Lerman and Jonathan Bronfman are executive producing. FilmNation is handling international sales.
Principal photography begins this week in and around New York City.
“Tracy, Linda and Danny are American acting royalty, masters of their craft and fearless in their commitment to their roles,” Schamus said. “I couldn’t be more honored to have them join the Indignation team.”
Letts is best known for his role as Andrew Lockhart on Homeland and his best actor Tony-winning performance in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? As a writer, he won the Pulitzer Prize for August: Osage County and also wrote the 2013 film’s screenplay. Letts is currently filming Adam McKay’s film The Big Short and Antonio Campos’ Christine. He is repped by Innovative Artists.
Three-time Tony-nominated and Obie-winning actress Emond is known for her extensive work with Tony Kushner and has appeared in such films as Julie & Julia, Across the Universe and Oldboy. Upcoming films include Three Generations, Jenny’s Wedding and The Family Fang. She is repped by CAA.
Burstein is a Grammy nominee and five-time Tony-nominated actor who has appeared in several TV series and films such as Blackhat, Transamerica and Boardwalk Empire. He is represented by BRS/Gage Talent Agency.
