Adapting the memoir of the same name by Bryan Stevenson, the feature project tells of the case that launched the career of the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, the organization that fights on behalf of the poor, the wrongly condemned and death-row prisoners trapped in the justice system.
Just Mercy was a memoir that focuses on Stevenson’s first case, that of Walter McMillian, a black man sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. Despite being at a barbecue surrounded by dozens of witnesses at the time of the murder, McMillian was convicted in a trial that lasted a day and a half. He spent six years on death row.
Stevenson took on the case, discovering that the prosecution suppressed evidence, ending up in McMillian’s exoneration.
Jordan is producing with Gil Netter and Arthur Spector.
Foxx is fitting the movie in before he stars in Spawn, Blumhouse’s take on the Image Comics superhero that is eyeing a shoot in the fall. The actor, last seen in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, is repped by CAA, LBI Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
