Alice Through the Looking Glass opened at No. 1 at the Japanese box office, taking $5.2 million including its Friday opening and $4.1 million on Saturday and Sunday, despite its poor reviews and underwhelming performance globally.
James Bobin’s take on the Lewis Carroll stories continued Disney’s strong run in Japan, where Zootopia fell one spot to No. 3 and added another $900,000 to take its total to $68.5 million during its 11th weekend in the top three.
Despite the relatively strong opening, the latest Alice is unlikely to match the huge local performance of Alice in Wonderland, which bowed to $14 million in Japan in 2010 and finished north of $130 million, putting it second in the country only to Avatar that year.
Dark comedy Too Young To Die! (Wakakushite Shinu) dropped one spot from its No. 1 bow last weekend.
Botanical Books (Shokubutsu Zukan: Unmei no Koi) fell one slot to No. 4 on its fifth weekend, while the 28th film from kids anime franchise Anpaman opened at No. 5 with $769,000.
Sadako vs. Kayako, featuring the scary female characters of The Grudge (Ju-on) and The Ring horror series, dropped two spots to No. 6 this weekend.
The second part of local police drama 64 (Rokuyon) also fell two spots, to No. 7 in its fourth weekend.
Propping up the weekend charts from the bottom was Deadpool, which dropped from No. 6, adding another $423,000 to bring its total to $17.8 million.
Warcraft failed to crack the top 10 on a limited release, pulling in just $273,000, unsurprising given the lack of a local language version of the World of Warcraft game on which the film is loosely based.
Independence Day: Resurgence gets a Japanese release on Saturday July 9.
