Ted 2 rose to the number one spot at the Japanese box office with $2.6 million (?306 million) this weekend, even though it brought in 30 percent less than in its debut last weekend behind Jurassic World. The dinosaur film fell to second place, grossing another $2.5 million (?299 million) and taking its local total past $65 million (?7.79 billion) from 5.2 million tickets sold.
The first Ted finished its Japanese box-office run with $44 million in 2013, though the currently weaker yen means the sequel will have to outperform that considerably to register the same numbers in dollar terms. Ted 2 has so far racked up $11 million (?1.31 billion) since its Sept. 27 opening.
Local police drama Unfair the End was in third with $2.47 million (?295 million), though its admissions tally of 214,000 puts it at number one on the local charts, which are calculated by the number of tickets sold rather than gross revenue. This is the third Unfair installment since 2007, with Ryoko Shinohara playing the tough, female detective lead, as she did in the original 2006 TV series and specials.
Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation fell one spot to fourth in its fifth weekend in Japanese theaters and took its local total to $37.4 million (?4.47 billion).
Minions also dropped one place, to fifth, and has passed the $40-million (?4.78 billion) mark — from 3.95 million admissions — for Universal after six weekends.
Live-action manga adaptation S: The Last Policeman: Recovery of Our Future, dropped one spot to sixth in its second weekend and now has reached a total of $4.3 million (?518 million).
Mamoru Hosoda‘s anime film The Boy and the Beast (Bakemono no Koi) fell to the ninth spot and has taken $46.4 million (?5.54 billion) after nine weekends in release.
