TOKYO – Fuji TV has partnered with Crunchyroll, the U.S. online platform that specializes in Japanese anime and drama, to host its content exclusively in North America. Fuji’s new drama Gokuaku Ganbo will be one of the 21 titles available, scheduled to stream a few days after its broadcast in Japan.
“This is the first time we have distributed our dramas like this in the U.S. It’s a good way to celebrate Fuji’s 55thanniversary this year,” Taka Hayakawa, Fuji’s deputy director of worldwide production and sales, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Fuji is scheduled to announce the deal at MIPTV in Cannes.
“Our vision is to provide our users the best quality and variety of content anywhere, anytime. This partnership brings us one step closer to that vision,” said Vince Shortino, EVP of Crunchyroll’s Japan channels, in a statement.
Crunchyroll has more than 300,000 subscribers to its premium content service.
Fuji TV, one of Japan’s biggest networks, has also teamed up with Phil Gurin‘s The Gurin Company and domestic creative house Taiyo Kikaku to develop formats. The first fruit of that collaboration — Whose Side Are You On?, a “twisted physical and mental game show” — will be at MIPTV.
FreemantleMedia and Fuji TV have been cooperating on formats for the international market since 2010.
