Fox has picked up an untitled comedy pitch centering on punk rockers-turned-fathers, with Jason Segel attached to star. He will co-write the script with Drew Pearce, creator of the British superhero comedy No Heroics and one of the town’s big tentpole scribes.
The story centers on a man who used to be in a rock band and goes on a tour years after his golden age.
The project is based on The Other F Word, a 2011 documentary that explores the world of aging punk musicians as they transition into fatherhood and try to maintain the contrast between their anti-authoritarian lifestyle with the responsibilities of being a dad.
Andrea Blaugrund Nevins wrote and directed the doc and produced it with Cristan Reilly. The two will exec produce the feature version.
Sources say the deal was in the seven figures and that Fox beat out Paramount for the project.
There are surface similarities to a Warner Bros. project titled Of All the Things. That one, which has Steve Carell attached, also is based on a documentary and centers on a former highflying singer-songwriter who discovers he’s still popular in the Philippines.
Pearce, since nabbing Hollywood’s attention with No Heroics, has worked on such high-profile projects as Iron Man 3 and Godzilla.
Segel will appear in This Is 40, Judd Apatow’s latest directorial effort, which opens Dec. 21.
Both are repped by WME. Pearce is additionally repped by PBJ Entertainment and Sloane Offer, while Segel is additionally repped by Abrams Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
The trailer for the documentary is below.
