Sad news for fashion purists who are still slightly in awe of the big gun, household name designers who have seemingly been around forever. In the Sept. 16 issue of WWD, Jean Paul Gaultier announced that, after 38 years, he would be closing his ready-to-wear business to focus on couture, perfume and various other projects.
“For some time, I have found true fulfillment in working on the haute couture and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation,” the 62-year-old designer wrote in a letter published by the fashion trade publication. “At the same time the world of ready-to-wear has evolved considerably. Commercial constraints, as well as the frenetic pace of collections don’t leave any freedom, nor the necessary time to find fresh ideas and to innovate.”
Gaultier has dressed everyone from Rihanna to Cate Blanchett to Marion Cotillard and Nicole Kidman. He’s outfitted Lady Gaga videos and designs stage costumes for the likes of Kylie Minogue, who is scheduled to kick off a worldwide tour Sept. 24. A popular retrospective of his work went from the Brooklyn Museum to London’s Barbican Gallery and can currently be viewed at Australia’s National Museum of Victoria.
The house is controlled by Puig, a family-owned, Barcelona-based fashion holdings powerhouse that holds the fragrance incenses for Prada and Commes des Garcons and owns Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci and Paco Rabanne. In 2016, the company will gain control of Gaultier’s lucrative fragrance license, which WWD lists as the most successful part of the business.
The designer’s final ready-to-wear show during Paris Fashion Week is scheduled for Sept. 27.
