Jennifer Lawrence made a flawless appearance in a Christian Dior gown at the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 with an equally perfect mani to match. Celebrity nail artist Jenna Hipp gets credit for the sleek black half-moon look, which was chosen to complement Lawrence’s soft, light pink lip shade. “That set the tone for the rest of the look,” says Hipp.
“Jennifer is incredibly stylish and usually has a very good idea which shade to paint right off the bat,” notes Hipp, who has worked with the Oscar-winning actress for four years. “In this case, we decided a nude/pink polish would be best. That said, we wanted to add a point of interest while still keeping it classy and classic.”
To re-create the look, Hipp recommends prepping hands and nails with Dr. Hauschka Neem Nail Oil, followed by Hipp’s own Essential Nail & Handcream applied to nails and cuticles. After cleaning and filing nails, Hipp recommends applying one coat of her new Prime and Shine base and topcoat, followed by one coat of her black Night Cap shade. After letting each layer dry completely (using a hairdryer on a cool setting can help speed up the process), apply reinforcement tabs on the base of each cuticle and cover a small amount of the nail to create half moons. Next, paint two layers of a full-coverage nude shade (Hipp is currently working on releasing her own in January with Beauty’s Most Wanted) to create “an instant throwback vibe,” says Hipp. And don’t be alarmed if the nude hue is affected by the black coat beneath; simply apply a third coat for extra coverage. Complete the look with a Prime and Shine topcoat.
“People weren’t expecting this direction, which made it even more appealing,” says Hipp. “Still neutral and elegant, classy with a hint of rock ‘n’ roll, this look is exciting to wear and easy to re-create.”
