As thousands of students headed to March for Our Lives events across the globe on Saturday, Jimmy Fallon, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga shared that they would be sponsoring buses to the main Washington march in support of the event.
“I am proud to sponsor a bus, heading from Harlem to DC for #MarchForOurLives,” Gaga wrote Friday on her Twitter account. “Our bus will be one of 17 buses, representing the lives lost in the Parkland shooting and those lost every day to gun violence. Join youth from @StreetCornerRes & so many more, marching for safer communities, this weekend & every day. I am proud to support them. #NeverAgain.”
“Today is @AMarch4OurLives. I’m partnering with @MTV and @NAACP to sponsor a bus full of smart young young people traveling from NYC to #MarchForOurLives Washington, D.C. today. Thank you for standing up and saying you’ve had #ENOUGH. See you there,” Fallon tweeted.
The posts were part of an initiative organized by MTV and the NAACP to encourage the youth participating in March for Our Lives’ 847 marches worldwide, which were organized after the mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in their activism.
Yara Shahidi, The Roots, Nick Cannon, Carmelo Anthony, Pusha T, Halsey and Chloe x Halle are also set to support the gun violence protest with videos, images and other messages on their social platforms.
Shahidi shared MTV’s Twitter post about the effort with the caption: “So exciting and inspiring! #myGenRocks.”
“Once again young people are at the forefront of driving change,” MTV president Chris McCarthy said Thursday in a statement. “Today’s study revealed an overwhelming 75% of teens polled are ‘not going to wait until they are adults to make real political change,’ and MTV is proud to amplify this youth-led activism.”
Fallon announced earlier in the month that he would be attending the march with his wife and children. “I encourage all of you — families, students, teachers, anyone who wants change — head to Washington this Saturday, or find a local march happening in your city, and show your support for these kids as they make their voices heard,” he said Tuesday on The Tonight Show. “Our future is speaking, and we should listen.”
