Bright lips are already taking a backseat on the Golden Globes red carpet, making way for statement-making eyes. And for proof, look no further than Jennifer Lopez and best-actress nominees Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain, who all stepped out with nearly nude lip colors, paired with deep, sexy eye shadows.
Playing off Chastain’s deep-plunging, black metallic Versace gown, makeup artist Kristofer Buckle “wanted to shift the attention,” he says of his decision to focus on her eyes. “She wears a vibrant lip very often,” he notes. Using Yves Saint Laurent’s five-shade Couture Palettes in Couleurs 01 and 03, Buckle swept complementary bronze and black shades across Chastain’s eyes, “concentrating on the outer part of the eye, more than anything,” he explains.
Buckle, who appeared on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s third-annual beauty issue with Chastain, “didn’t want to do just a nude lip,” he explains of his decision to use YSL’s Baby Doll Kiss & Blush Lips & Cheeks in Mocha Garconne, layered with the brand’s shimmery Volupte Sheer Candy in Lush Coconut. “I think that people have been working the lips a long time. I just feel like people play more with lip color in the summer,” he says. “With this dress, I wanted [Jessica’s] look to feel more cool and edgy.”
