Jennifer Lopez has signed on to star in the stripper story Hustlers.
Annapurna is developing an adaptation of the New York magazine article “Hustlers at Scores,” about former strip club employees who devised a scheme to steal tens of thousands of dollars from their wealthy Wall Street clients.
Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Meddler) is directing the film and also wrote the script based on the 2015 piece by Jessica Pressler. Annapurna and Gloria Sanchez are producing the Robin Hood-type tale with Scafaria co-producing
Lopez will play a former stripper and the ringleader of the group of ambitious women who take their plans of getting their full cut too far.
Scafaria’s script takes place in the late 2000s in New York City in the wake of the financial crisis and explores the toll it took on the livelihood of the dancers who relied on Wall Street clientele.
“The film is an empathetic look at women and men, our gender roles, what we’re valued for, what we’ve been told is our value in every movie, TV show, every corner of culture. Men have been told they’re worth the size of their bank accounts. Women have been told they’re worth the symmetry of their faces, their bodies, their beauty, and that’s what this film is based on. The rules of the club are the rules of the world,” said Scafaria.
Lopez, recently named the 2018 recipient of the MTV Video Music Awards’ Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, previously starred on the big screen in The Boy Next Door, Monster-in-Law and The Wedding Planner, among other films. On TV, she has produced and served as a judge on the dance competition show World of Dance.
“There is no other actor who could embody this raw and dynamic character with such complexity, humanity and intelligence. It’s always been her. She’s fucking Jennifer Lopez.” added Scafaria.
Lopez and producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas will executive produce, along with associate producer Alexandra Brown. Lopez is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallenstein.
