Following Bradley Cooper’s recent statement that he plans to start helping female co-stars negotiate their paychecks, Jeremy Renner told Business Insider that he does not intend to get involved in salary discussions.
“That’s not my job,” said Renner. “I don’t know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.”
The Avengers star said he is in favor of actresses receiving equal pay but would rather focus on the craft of acting.
“I’m a performer, and I know human behavior. When it comes to that sort of stuff, I let other people deal with that,” continued Renner. “I do what I’m good at — that’s what I focus on.”
Salary details released during the Sony hack revealed that Lawrence was paid less for American Hustle than her male co-stars, including Cooper and Renner.
On Friday, Renner took to WhoSay to clarify his comments on the gender pay gap. Read his full statement below.
So to set the record straight and give some clarity to how I feel, which seems not to have been reported in its entirety, I lean on social media to relate with people directly because this is important to me.
On the issue of gender equality I have always supported women deserving equal pay. Period. A person should be rewarded only by their merit or service to their given field. Gender, race, creed, or sexual orientation should have absolutely no influence in pay, positively or negatively.
I have always asked for all of us to move towards a unity and equality not just in pay, but social acceptance and discover compassion and tolerance within ourselves, to bridge our differences; united we stand. We will always be one. Like it or not.
— Jeremy Renner
