It’s a rare night in Hollywood when denim is the preferred dress code of choice, but that’s what happens when stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, along with photographer Hilary Walsh, bring friends together to celebrate their new jean-centric tome, A Denim Story: Inspirations From Bellbottoms to Boyfriends. The event was held at Melrose’s The Hart and The Hunter inside the Palihotel, hosted by Anthropologie on Tuesday night. Sporting cropped jackets, skinny fits and a sea of denim shirts, partygoers turned out in their favorite shades of blue to support Current and Elliott, who gave the famed boyfriend jean icon status with the launch of their former namesake line, Current/Elliott.

Over tables draped in denim and dotted with rabbit-eared napkin rings and dip-dyed blue flowers, the trio, along with a few fashion-forward friends, fondly recalled when their love of denim began. “I got a pair of Guess jeans for my birthday when I was 11. They were acid-washed with zipper bottoms!” said Elliott. So it’s no surprise that best friend Current’s first pair was also from the same brand — “a pair of Marilyn Guess jeans with the zipper bottoms and triangle on the back pocket!” she said.
Their client and guest Mandy Moore, dressed in Tanya Taylor for the evening (topped off with a denim jacket, natch), confessed to being a big fan of Gap growing up (as did Walsh, who vividly recalled graduating to Gap denim shorts in 1990 after rocking elasticated high-waisted jeans), while Jessica Alba fondly remembered owning a pair of Bongo jeans (preferably paired with shell-toe Adidas, she noted).

Stylist Micaela Erlanger, responsible for dressing the likes of red-carpet breakout star and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, was a vision of blue for the evening, donning a J.Crew denim shirt with curve-hugging Koral jeans. “My first pair of designer jeans were Miss Sixty,” she mused. “I was 16 and in Rome with my family — they were the perfect low-rise hip-hugger bell-bottom and they had stretch!” And considering Erlanger landed No. 3 on The Hollywood Reporter‘s 25 Most Powerful Stylists of 2014, we can only imagine how on-trend they were.
