Following in the footsteps of his newly debuted, first freestanding U.S. boutique in West Hollywood, designer John Eshaya has announced his first JET menswear collection, hitting shelves this week.
The launch was inspired in part by Eshaya’s new JET store location on Beverly Boulevard, which rubs shoulders with neighborhood staple King’s Road Cafe. Inspired by an influx of predominantly male customers from the coffee shop who repeatedly inquired about menswear, Eshaya was motivated to launch his first men’s line, which draws upon some of the classic shapes and fabrics of JET’s women’s collection (including the line’s original best-selling sweatshirts, which marked the line’s launch in 1987).
The new boutique is also a stone’s throw from West Hollywood’s Fred Segal, where Eshaya gained his fashion pedigree, working his way from a sales position to Fred Segal’s vp, creative director and buyer over the span of 24 years until his departure in 2008. During this time, Eshaya played a key role in giving a number of Los Angeles’ most prominent designers their big break, including Cynthia Vincent and Trina Turk.
Modeled after JET’s two freestanding Tokyo locations, the new U.S. flagship carries a curated selection of vintage accessories, from Hermes watches to Chanel belts to Louis Vuitton bags, in addition to JET’s go-to basics. “JET’s look is all about capturing that California cool and casual vibe. These are clothes you can wear every day. It comes down to the fabric, feel and comfort of it,” says Eshaya. “We keep the silhouettes pretty classic, but give everything our JET twist. Everything is made here in California, and it shows.”
