Getty ImagesAustralian rock band Jet, whose 2003 garage rock anthem “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” was not only a radio hit, but a television commercial staple, is calling it quits after a decade together.
The band’s management company, Tenth Street Entertainment, made the announcement on Monday. The reason cited for the split? “The members … have chosen to pursue separate creative endeavors.”
Formed in 2001 by brothers Nic Cester and Chris Cester along with guitarist Cameron Muncey and bassist Mark Wilson while attending St Bede’s College Mentone in Melbourne, the band released the platinum selling Get Born in 2003, its success catapulted in part by an iPod ad featuring the song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl.” Two more full-lengths followed, Shine On in 2006 and Shaka Rock in 2009. In total, the band has sold more than 6.5 million albums worldwide.
Says the band in a statement: “After many successful years of writing, recording and touring we wish to announce our discontinuation as a group. From the many pubs, theatres, stadiums and festivals all across the world it was the fans that made our amazing story possible and we wish to thank them all. Thank you, and goodnight.”

Jet’s music will live on through new licensing and publishing effort, says the band’s manager and Tenth Street vp of tour marketing Brad Friess. “We will continue the JET brand and their global footprint. Although the band will cease to exist as an entity, we will be working very closely with the members of JET to keep the fans happy with new product in the market place.”
