The Hollars hits close to home for John Krasinski and his cast.
“Returning home is always a memorable thing because there is this experience of revising who you used to be,” said the director and star of the film to The Hollywood Reporter at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
The movie zooms in on an aspiring New York City artist who returns to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s brain surgery. “I think being confronted with an older version of yourself is really intense, and I think also being confronted with an older version of what people think you are,” Krasinski continued.
Actress Margo Martindale agreed, saying, “You always try to be the child from when you were there. … It’s very vulnerable to be an adult around your family. I still act like a child around my brother!”
Even more so, The Hollars has Krasinski’s John Hollar heading home with his girlfriend, eight months pregnant with their first child, and facing the crazy world he left behind.
“It really kind of expresses how imperfect love can be, either romantically, family, … that it’s not a perfect puzzle piece,” said Josh Groban who is featured in the film with Richard Jenkins, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick and Sharlto Copley, among others. “Even when it’s most functional, it can still be dysfunctional.”
