John Mayer Admits to Being a ‘Jerk’ in Prior Relationships (Video)

John Mayer is taking responsibility for acting like a “jerk” in previous high-profile relationships.

In an interview airing on the next CBS Sunday Morning, the singer-songwriter says he has changed his ways since the days in which he made controversial comments about ex-girlfriends Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson in interviews. He also had other notable romantic entanglements — with Taylor Swift, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Minka Kelly — and he isn’t proud of how he behaved.

“I was just a jerk,” he told CBS’ Anthony Mason, saying he’s now changed.

“It’s very liberating when you finally realize it’s impossible to make everyone like you,” he said, adding, “I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction.”

He also discussed dealing with health issues that at times made it impossible for him to sing and that forced him to cancel a 2012 tour. He has undergone surgery and received injections in his neck to correct a granuloma in his throat. But despite this, he said the fallout from bad press and the reputation he earned for being a playboy was worse than not being able to perform.

Mayer also opened up about Katy Perry, whom he has dated on and off since the summer.

A clip from the episode shows footage of Mayer at his Jan. 16 concert — his first live show in 20 months — during which the singer announced he is officially free from the throat illness that plagued his singing abilities.

“The thing is gone,” he told fans at the concert, referring to the granuloma, or nodule, that was in his throat.

Mayer joked with the screaming fans in the audience and said, “Lower your expectations,” noting that he still had a chemical in his throat from his treatments that could affect the way he sounds.

Mayer then proceeded to perform “Speak for Me,” a track off his 2012 album Born and Raised. The concert was held in Bozeman, Mont., and benefited firefighters who had fought an area forest fire last summer.

Mayer just released the official music video for “Something Like Olivia,” another track from Born and Raised, on Feb. 6. Mayer’s episode of CBS’ Sunday Morning is set to air Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. ET, 6 a.m. PT.
