John Oliver focused on sex education during Last Week Tonight on Sunday. He discussed how the U.S. does not have a required standard for sex education in the country, and why a lack of proper education is harmful to students.
“Parental anger over sex ed is as much a staple of the school year as square pizza and one kid coming back from summer vacation with a mustache he’s way too proud of,” said Oliver as he launched the segment.
Oliver weaved abstinence and sex ed videos throughout the program, showing one woman urging men to run from girls trying to tempt boys with their clothing. Another video implied that “uterine blood makes you amazing at bowling” and starred a young Jonathan Banks from Breaking Bad.
The host said that sex education is important in school because children and parents don’t like to talk about sex together, likening it to when a sex scene comes on while everyone is watching a movie together: “Everyone becomes motionless and silently begs for the merciful release of death.”
Contraception and consent are both topics that are crucial on which to properly educate people, he points out. “When it’s done badly it can do real harm,” he said, adding, “Sex is like boxing. If both people didn’t agree to participate, one of them is committing a crime.”
After mocking sex education videos and speeches with jokes like “God is watching you masturbate and the fluid coming out of your genitals are actually his tears,” and “Why are you trying to yell the horniness out of teenagers?”, Oliver revealed his own sex ed video.
The video starred Laverne Cox, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Kristen Schaal, Kumail Nanjiani, Jonathan Banks, Aisha Tyler and Jack McBrayer.
The video tells viewers that if people make fun of you for your choice about having sex or not, “those people are assholes” and advises them to have sex with Ryan Gosling if they are given the chance. When explaining that IUDs can stay inside a woman for up to ten years, Nanjiani jokes, “Which is a lot considering most guys in high school can only stay inside you for a minute or two tops.” Watch that, plus the ultimate lesson provided by Banks at the end.
