On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver weighed in on Steve Bannon’s exit from the White House, expressing disappointment with how little he thinks the departure will effect the Trump administration.
“The truly depressing thing about Bannon’s departure is just how utterly unsatisfying it actually is,” said Oliver. “Because, yes, one panderer-to-white-nationalists has left the White House. The problem is, the one he was working for is still very much there.” Last Week Tonight put up a photograph of Trump as Oliver said the last line.
Oliver mocked Fox News’ Melissa Francis for crying on camera about how awful she feels when defending Trump as he talked about there being “very fine people” at the white supremacist rally.
“If you are getting emotionally overwhelmed and feeling judged for defending Trump in his Nazi sympathizer phase, stop fucking doing it.” he said, adding, “How did you manage to make this about you?”
The host talked about how he wished more Republicans in Congress would come forward and denounce Trump’s words and actions. He also said he doesn’t agree that this might be a “turning point” for Trump because at this point he feels like America is just “spinning” on a carousel that won’t stop.
“We’ve vomited so much there’s nothing left to throw up. And there’s just no way to get off because an unstable, race-baiting carny is operating the controls,” said Oliver.
“And we’re probably going to go through a lot more before Republicans ever decide to do anything,” he continued. He brought up the photo of Trump surrounded by Pence and aides that have all since left the administration. “Because the hard truth here is that nothing is really going to change in the White House until one more person in that photo finally gets shown the fucking door.”
