John Oliver Criticizes Trump for “Stupid Watergate” Baseless Wiretap Claims

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver dove briefly into what he calls “stupid Watergate” — better known as President Donald Trump’s accusations that former President Barack Obama wiretapped him during the election, despite not presenting any evidence that this occurred.

Oliver calls it “a potential scandal with all the intrigue of Watergate except everyone involved is really bad at everything.”

“The relevant question isn’t so much ‘What did the president know and when did he know it?’ as it is ‘Is the president physically capable of knowing things at all?’” added Oliver. He said that, to provide context of where the U.S. is right now, he would like to point out that Dan Quayle misspelled potato in 1992 and it was a huge news story.

“But we are now at a point where the president is so busy hurling destabilizing conspiracy theories around, we can’t even pause to enjoy the fact he misspelled the word ‘tap,’” said Oliver. He highlighted the fact that Trump’s evidence against the former POTUS is “pretty thin” and said it seems odd a president would state something as fact and then try to launch an investigation to support that claim.

“I guess this is just how things are going to work now,” he said “The president once saw a banana with a bruise that looked like a picture in an article he read in a dream and that is why we’re at f—ing war.”

The main segment of Oliver’s show on Sunday focused on the Dalai Lama. Oliver flew to India to interview the Dalai Lama, who laughed throughout their conversation as Oliver made jokes.

They talked about serious matters like China’s oppression of Tibet, self-immolation, and why this Dalai Lama could be the last one. But Oliver weaved in light-hearted topics too, like when he asked the Dalai Lama about his claim that he cured people of alcoholism by turning them on to horse milk.

“You tried to wean them off vodka by giving them horse milk?” said Oliver. “Yes,” replied the Dalai Lama. “They follow.”
