Johnny Depp will be jetting over to China later this month to promote upcoming sci-fi thriller Transcendence. It will be the actor’s first trip to the world’s number-two movie market.
Depp is slated to arrive in Beijing on March 31 for a two-day press blitz. His visit is being arranged by Beijing-based studio DMG, co-producers of Transcendence with Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. DMG is also distributing the film in China and handling its local marketing.
Transcendence stars Depp as a terminally ill scientist who downloads his mind into a computer, gaining powers beyond his wildest dreams. The film is said to explore the perhaps not-too-distant moment when computer intelligence surpasses the power of the human mind. It co-stars Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany.
Said DMG CEO Dan Mintz in a statement: “China is a leading tech power, with its manufacturing might and fast-growing space program. It’s totally conceivable that the next breakthroughs in artificial intelligence will come from China, so the story has a strong appeal and pull for Chinese audiences.”
According to DMG, Depp will make appearances with popular Chinese actors, musicians and artists at events tailored to suit his unique persona. The promotional events will recorded and cut into promotional spots that will be broadcast across China in the run-up to the film’s local release.
DMG is best known for co-producing Iron Man 3 with Marvel and Disney. In the weeks leading up to IM3‘s release in 2013, the studio hosted a gala birthday party event for Robert Downey Jr. inside the Forbidden City in central Beijing, which was later turned into a one-hour TV special that broadcast on CCTV. IM3 was the highest-grossing Hollywood release in China last year, with $124 million.
Transcendence opens in the U.S. on April 18. The China release date is expected to be announced soon.
