The most stylish pair in sports will be back together again on Saturday when Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski head to the green pastures of Louisville for the Kentucky Derby.
NBC’s fashion experts shared their secrets for picking out the perfect race day ensemble in a conference call, where Weir revealed that his choice will be far from mainstream. “I obviously needed a custom hat because I’m me,” he said, revealing that he has been brainstorming with designer Kerin Rose Gold of A-Morir (who works with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry).
“I can tell you that the theme of my hat for Derby Day is Pegasus!” he exclaimed.
“I like to wear craziness at all costs because that’s my personality — I’m definitely going to bring myself to the Kentucky Derby, but I wanted a little bit of tradition in what I’m wearing,” said Weir, who plans to mix a bit of vintage with a dash of Christian Louboutin.
His Sochi style sidekick, Lipinski revealed that she’s flirting with Oliver Tolentino, Ted Baker and David Meister for her first Kentucky Derby. “It’s just one of those events that is a once in a lifetime type thing,” she gushed. “The fashion is so unique for this specific event that it’s a lot of fun to see what everyone shows up in.”
“The Kentucky Derby has this whole cultural sidestep and sideshow to the actual big race,” explained Weir. “There is drinking and partying and fashion and celebrity and all of these things that go into it.”
While glamorous gowns and stylish suits are a must at Churchill Downs, the hat is the key to any Derby Day outfit, which Weir calls “necessary,” whether it be a fedora, straw hat or a fascinator.
“If I see a beautiful hat with an Elmo stuffed animal on the side that’s completely rhinestone-studded … you know, that’s obviously going to catch my eye,” he revealed, adding that he’s also looking forward to “pastels, pops of color” and hot summer shades like emerald and mint green.
Lipinski went on to say: “I can’t really think of any other event, especially a sporting event, where the hat is the main focal point, and pretty much makes the entire outfit.”
Beyond the fashion, the Kentucky Derby is, of course, about the 20-horse race that becomes the fastest two minutes in sports.
“I’m so looking forward to the race itself. I love horses; I love the excitement of the race. I like the build-up, I like the people waving their receipt and their bet ticket in the air,” Weir said. “I’m excited for the tradition. I’m excited for the spectacle that it creates.”
Don’t underestimate the colorful couple getting in on the equestrian action, “Maybe I’ll throw a saddle on and Tara can ride me!” Weir joked.
Coverage of the Kentucky Oaks begins on Friday noon PT, and the 140th Kentucky Derby will air on Saturday on NBC beginning at 1 p.m. PST.
