The indie feature from Caramel Films and Mednick Productions will be shot in Montreal, Vancouver and Thailand in April 2016. Hartnett will play Canadian investigative journalist Victor Malarek, forced to change his maverick methods after the birth of his first child, in the film based on real events that took place in 1989.
Gut Instinct will also portray the interconnected stories of an ex-heroin junkie who gets trapped by a criminal organization to set up a drug deal in Thailand and an undercover cop who takes a shortcut to help his team.
Besides Gut Instinct, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles producer Scott Mednick of Mednick Productions and Andre Rouleau of Caramel Films are also backing another movie, Devil’s Gate, starring Amanda Schull and Milo Ventimiglia, and previously worked together on Dreamworks’ Delivery Man and Wait Till Helen Comes with Maria Bello.
Hartnett’s credits include Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down and another upcoming film, The Long Home, directed by James Franco. Gut Instinct is Roby’s fourth feature after White Skin, Funkytown and Louis Cyr: The Strongest Man in the World.
The film is produced by Rouleau and Valerie d’Auteuil and executive produced by Mednick and Roby. Hartnett is represented by United Talent Agency and Management 360.
Roby is represented by Agence MVA, CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. The U.S. sales for Gut Instinct are being handled by UTA. International sales are being handled by Caramel Films.
