Getty ImagesClothes and costumes may not immediately come to mind when thinking about Judd Apatow, the funnyman producer known for such mega-hits as The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up.
But think about how clothes have shaped his characters — Steve Carell‘s virginal, middle-aged Andy wouldn’t have looked the part without his signature baggy khakis and striped cotton polo shirts; Leslie Mann‘s uptight Knocked Up character Debbie wouldn’t have been able to effectively rip the infamous doorman a new one in anything but her skintight turquoise sequin number that put the younger clubgoers she ranted against to shame.

That, combined with Apatow’s penchant for working with contemporary costume design’s brightest names (Girls designer Jenn Rogien, for one), is why he’ll receive the annual Distinguished Collaborator honor at this year’s CDG awards ceremony on Feb. 22.
SNL creator Lorne Michaels — another rather unexpected choice — took home the same award last year, which makes us realize just how important the power of seamless costumes are when developing the look and feel of both a three-minute skit and a three-hour film.
