There’s something about 40. Writer/director Judd Apatow returns to familiar territory with This is 40, whose trailer was released today. Billed as a “sort-of-sequel to Knocked Up,” the comedy sees Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd “sort of” reprising their roles as Pete and Debbie — a lovably imperfect couple based on Apatow’s real married life with Mann.

Winkingly set to Fun.’s anthem “We Are Young,” the trailer suggests a movie more in line with 2009’s Funny People, however, offering more wistfulness than raunch as it explores themes of love and family through the anxieties of middle age. Supporting faces include such Apatow regulars as Melissa McCarthy and Jason Segel, but we’re offered no glimpes of Albert Brooks and John Lithgow as the couple’s neurotic fathers-in-law.
The Universal film is slated for a December release.
