Murdoch’s News International, currently embroiled in a perfect storm of bad press, falling stock values and high profile resignations kick-started by The News of the World cell phone-hacking scandal reacted robustly to Law’s move.
The company’s lawyers accused the actor of a “deeply cynical and deliberately mischievous attempt” to drag The Sun, News International’s remaining flagship tabloid into the scandal that saw The News of the World shuttered after 160 years plus of publication.
In a statement Friday, News International said Law’s allegations “have no foundation whatsoever” and vowed to vigorously fight his claim.
Rebekah Brooks announced early Friday that she would be exiting her post as News International’s chief executive. Wall Street Journal publisher Les Hinton, who used to run News International as executive chairman at the time of the alleged phone hacking, resigned on Friday as CEO of News Corp.’s Dow Jones Unit.
“Les and I have been on a remarkable journey together for more than 52 years,” Murdoch said in a statement after Hinton resigned. “That this passage has come to an unexpected end, professionally, not personally, is a matter of much sadness to me.”
Law’s law firm, Atkins Thomson, declined to give details of the claim, which it said “will be considered by the court in due course.
Law is also suing The News of the World. That case is due to be heard next year.
Law recently finished filming the Sherlock Holmes sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in which he plays Watson opposite Robert Downey Jr.‘s Holmes.
A former News of the World staff member exclusively told The Hollywood Reporter how she was sent with a tiny “pen cam” with orders to catch Mike Tyson in a “cocaine orgy” and when finding nothing, editors embellished her story with “three-way sex and other activities I had not witnessed.”
