Julia Louis-Dreyfus released a video Tuesday that urges progressives and Democrats to vote, but, more important, volunteer to help elect progressives and Democrats into Congress. The PSA is part of the Multiply Your Vote campaign.
“A corrupt, self-obsessed, inept moron, who somehow becomes president of the United States,” began Louis-Dreyfus in the video. “That’s the character that I play on HBO’s Veep.”
The camera zooms out to show the actress standing with a group of people all clad in blue. “But when I’m off of TV, I’m not a politician. I’m not an expert. I’m a citizen,” she said. “And I know that the midterm election on Nov. 6 is beyond important. It is vital.”
“I mean, sure. I’m going to vote Democrat,” she said as the group around her agreed that they’re all on the same page politically. “That’s not enough. We need more than just your votes.”
She then encouraged viewers to volunteer, “because when you volunteer, you multiple your votes.” Louis-Dreyfus then asked her peers why they’re volunteering. Their answers ranged from environmental concerns to women’s rights, immigration reform and free press.
When one volunteer shared that his father is a cancer patient, he said that he’s fighting for affordable health care.
Drawing on her own recent battle with breast cancer, Louis-Dreyfus said, “I’m a cancer survivor, too, and I’m really lucky because I had access to excellent health insurance even with a preexisting condition and that’s the way it should be for absolutely everybody. It’s not.”
“The Republican Congress is making it worse,” she continued. “But the Democrats can change that.”
The actress then explained the importance of volunteering for campaigns. “Every campaign needs volunteers to write postcards, to make phone calls, to register folks to vote,” she said as the group of volunteers walked down a street with clipboards. “Now today, we’re going door to door to hear what issues most concern our neighbors because that’s how we’re gonna win big in November.”
The video concludes with Louis-Dreyfus encouraging viewers to visit multiplyyourvote.org to learn about volunteer opportunities.
