AP Images/InvisionClad in a strapless, white and heavily embellished Chanel gown, best actress nominee Julianne Moore took her hair and makeup in a totally different direction than we’ve previously seen this awards season.
The biggest departure was her hair — a classic chignon with a deep side part, given to her by her mane man, Marcus Francis.
“We wanted to wear it up since we’ve done variations on wavy, shiny and texture,” says Francis. “But with this momentous evening, we wanted timeless, so when we look back in 30 years it feels classic.”

Francis focused on the soft wave in the front of Moore’s hair, bringing her side part a third of an inch past her eyebrow arch to get a more striking look and line to the updo. “It needed that extra third of an inch to get that line,” says the hairstylist. “It needed that drama.”
For the back, Francis referenced the easy, effortless feel of various French movie stars’ hair, so that the overall look didn’t result in a stiff or shellacked ballerina bun.

Also, carrying out the cool vibe of Moore’s Oscar look was her makeup — particularly her deep purple lip hue.
“This is kind of new for us,” says her makeup artist Elaine Offers of the dramatic berry lip shade. “But we wanted a contrast: She’s wearing white. The strong lip was a glamorous pop.”

Offers used a combo of two L’Oreal lip colors ($10), the first a brown-rose shade called Unending Amber and the other called Raisin Revival, a long-wear lip color that she applied with a sponge and a swipe of balm for moisture.
With all of the deep purple lips at the Oscars this evening, Offers recommends that when wearing the trend with fair skin, blot and balance out the shade so that it doesn’t appear too dark, but like the striking stain Moore sported down the red carpet.
