In the first head-to-head NFL championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, the Midwest team came out on top, winning Super Bowl 2020 by the score of 31-20 on Sunday.
The win followed a mostly tight game, where the teams entered the halftime show tied 10-10. The 49ers were the first to score with a field goal after winning the coin toss, but the Chiefs responded with a touchdown at the end of the first quarter and a field goal at the top of the second. The 49ers subsequently tied the game later in the quarter.
In the third quarter, the 49ers built a 10-point lead of their competitors, first kicking a successful 42-yard field goal before scoring a one-yard touchdown with under three minutes left in the quarter.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the Chiefs, as they put up three touchdowns in the final seven minutes and the 49ers failed to respond.
With the win, the Chiefs ended the second-longest Lombardi Trophy drought among teams that have already won a Super Bowl.
The last time Kansas City made it to the Super Bowl was Jan. 11, 1970, with the Chiefs topping the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV for their first Lombardi Trophy. This year’s team earned their way into the Super Bowl after defeating the Tennessee Titans, 35-24, in the AFC Championship Game. The Super Bowl win marked their second come-from-behind victory during the postseason following a comeback on the heels of a 24-point deficit against the Houston Texans.
Super Bowl LIV was held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the 11th time that the metropolitan area has hosted a Super Bowl and first since 2010. The game aired live on Fox.
