Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny and director Whit Stillman are reunited in Love & Friendship, after teaming up for The Last Days of Disco in 1998.
“We already had a knowledge of each other’s quirks,” Sevigny told The Hollywood Reporter of happily repeating the collaboration.
The Sundance Film Festival world premiere is an adaptation of a relatively unfamiliar early Jane Austen novella, “Lady Susan.”
The most difficult part of adapting Austen? “Getting the fans,” said Stillman. “I’ve always felt that for a filmmaker just to reduce one of her masterpieces, if you really love her masterpieces, it’s a bad experience to reduce to something smaller.”
“In this case, we could amplify something she left rather unfinished,” he continued. “We sort of had permission to add onto it, to make it a full story for film.”
But for Beckinsale, “It’s really difficult to have lunch or get through doorways — I had a hat the size of a cartwheel!”
