Kate Hudson on Tuesday night joined Fabletics executives and Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) members at an in-store event at the Del Amo Mall in Torrance, Calif.
The Deepwater Horizon star was on hand to celebrate the launch of a limited-edition pink seamless outfit with proceeds benefiting the CFDA’s Fashion Targets Breast Cancer Initiative. Customers were invited to celebrate the launch of the store and the limited-edition outfit with an opportunity to shop and meet the actress.
As the CFDA’s 2016 ambassador for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, Fabletics co-founder Hudson follows in the footsteps of Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Karolina Kurkova. The fund supports low-income, minority and immigrant women to help cover the costs of screening, preventative care and coping with cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Hudson, who previously dyed her hair with mother Goldie Hawn to promote breast cancer awareness, has long held this cause near and dear to her heart. “It’s just something every October that should be a no-brainer for women,” she told Pret-a-Reporter. “As a community of women, we should always be talking about it and having a dialogue and doing things to bring funds to it because we’re so on the precipice of getting close to where we can find a cure for breast cancer.”
The actress and health enthusiast wasn’t afraid to get political about the cause, saying, “I believe that women’s insurance should be covering women much earlier than 50 years old for preventative things, mammograms and things like that.”
With the capsule collection, which includes one pair of capri leggings, a bralette and two tank tops, Hudson is putting her unique stamp on breast cancer awareness via her athleisure line. Unlike the pale pink traditionally associated with Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives, the collection is a darker shade of pink with more of a magenta hue.
“I wanted to do a sort of more fallish feeling and something new,” said Hudson. “The pink is in there, but we sort of muted it out with maroon a little bit.”
In their three years on the market, Fabletics and Hudson have shown a dedication to designing outfits that are both chic and practical, athleisure wear for women of all shapes, sizes and lifestyles. Hudson explains the color choice stemmed from this desire to create something wearable, rather than just a fundraising tool. “I want women to wear what we’re putting out there,” she said. “So when they go, ‘Oh, that’s cute, what is that?’ Then women are saying, ‘Oh, this is for breast cancer.’”
Earlier this year, Hudson showcased her Fabletics collection onscreen in Mother’s Day, and she’s taken the social media world by storm with her fresh, honest, hilarious Snapchats. As to whether she’ll use her social media platform to promote this outfit and her role as ambassador for FTBC, the actress admitted she doesn’t plan that far in advance. “I’m sure I’ll be wearing it at some point, snapping it for some reason,” she said. “But I’m not very calculated in my approach to social media.”
The evening was accompanied by a DJ spinning tunes, as well as complimentary champagne, sparking water and hors d’oeuvres. In addition to signing books and merchandise for shoppers, Hudson also took a photo with the store staff to celebrate the opening of her 16th store and the launch of this collaborative collection.
