Sony will release director Kathryn Bigelow’s high-profile Navy Seal Team 6 project–about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden–on Oct. 12, 2012.
STORY: How Will Osama Bin Laden Death Impact Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Kill Bin Laden’ Movie?
It’s roughly the same frame Sony used to launch The Social Network.
Bigelow and writer Mark Boal—the pair behind Oscar-winning Iraqi war pic The Hurt Locker–had been working on the project for some time when Bin Laden was killed, changing the story’s direction.
Boal and Bigelow will produce the project, along with Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, which is financing. Greg Shapiro, who worked on Hurt Locker, is exec producing.

Production is slated to begin in the late summer.
The pickup marks another timely and elevated project for Amy Pascal and Columbia’s slate. After the success of The Social Network, they have proven themselves unafraid to try on dramas if the right creative people are involved.
