Katie Couric and Matt Lauer may be discussing launching a daytime talk show in the future, according to the Wall Street Journal, but they’ll reteam much sooner on the Today show.
“Katie and Matt will appear on the Today show together this Wednesday promoting her book,” her rep tells the New York Post of The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives, her new interview book that hits stores Tuesday.
As The Hollywood Reporter previously reported, Couric’s CBS News contract expires June, and she is unlikely to renew it. Among the things she’s considering is a syndicated daytime talk show in collaboration with Jeff Zucker, with whom she worked on Today.
Meanwhile, Lauer also may be following his current co-host, Meredith Vieira — who is likely to exit Today when her contract expires in September — in departing the top-rated morning news program when his contract expires in December 2012.
According to the WSJ, Zucker — who also worked with Lauer on Today — has been discussing the idea of reuniting the two, who hosted Today together from 1997, when Lauer joined the program, until Couric left in 2006.
However, it’s far from being a done deal. For starters, it’s not likely that NBC parent Comcast Corp. will let Lauer go so easily once his contract expires. In addition, the WSJ’s sources said they weren’t sure whether Couric’s discussions with Lauer will progress beyond just talk.
