On Monday’s show, Brzezinski claimed Conway came on Morning Joe during the 2016 presidential campaign and “would shill for Trump in extensive fashion and then she would get off the air, the camera would be turned off, the microphone would be taken off, and she would say, ‘Blech, I need to take a shower,’ because she disliked her candidate so much.”
Scarborough backed up his co-host, adding that Conway called stumping for then-candidate Trump her “summer vacation,” adding that she had to get through it. “I’m just doing this for the money” and “I’ll be off this soon,” the co-hosts claimed Conway said, adding that she began to refer to Trump as “her client” after the Access Hollywood tape came out.
“Taking a moment from more important matters to respond,” the counselor to President Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday, along with a screenshot of a lengthy statement reading: “The hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe have become virulent critics of the President and those close to him. Ignoring insults and insinuations is a valuable skill. But when sentiments are attributed to me that are not true, it is necessary to respond. My beliefs, commitments and loyalties are plain to see.”
She continued, “The notion that I am serving for ‘the money’ or a ‘paycheck’ is absurd. As a campaign manager, I made a fraction of what other consultants have made on unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Then I walked away from dozens of opportunities for millions of dollars, and instead walked into the White House. I would do it again.”
Conway called her job both then as campaign manager and now as Trump’s counselor a “privilege.”
“I know him. I respect him, I believe in him, and I am confident in his capacity to be a transformative and successful President,” she wrote.
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson was another critic of the engaged Morning Joe co-hosts, taking to his show to say the pair “humiliated themselves” for revealing alleged off-air conversations.
“I have no idea if Kellyanne Conway actually said anything like that,” said the host on Monday’s Tucker Carlson Tonight. “I do know that TV anchors almost never reveal what their guests have said off-camera for good reason. People come to TV studios so they can speak on TV. They do not come with the expectation that their private conversations will wind up broadcast to the country.”
In February, Brzezinski revealed behind-the-scenes details of Conway allegedly attempting to book herself on talk shows and announced that Conway was banned from Morning Joe.
Conway’s response comes as rumors continue to swirl that Trump might replace Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and possibly other members of his team. Fox News’ Kimberly Guilfoyle revealed in an interview Monday evening that she has been in conversation with Trump’s administration to take over Spicer’s role.
