The Wing, a co-working space designed specifically for women, has raised $75 million from a cadre of investors that includes Kerry Washington and other Times Up leaders Katie McGrath, Valerie Jarrett and Robbie Kaplan.
Sequoia Capital led the round, which also included participation from Upfront Ventures, Airbnb and past investors NEA and WeWork. Individuals who also invested include political consultant Hilary Rosen and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team players Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Meghan Klingenberg and Becky Sauerbrunn.
“The Wing is more than a company, it’s a phenomenon,” said Sequoia partner Jess Lee, who along with Upfront partner Kara Nortman has joined The Wing’s board of directors. “Every Wing location is its own extraordinary community of women who help each other achieve new heights, professionally and personally. We’re excited to partner with The Wing on growing its footprint globally in the physical realm and into the digital realm.”
Founded in 2016, The Wing co-founder and CEO Audrey Gelman took the concept of co-working popularized by WeWork and others and combined it with the exclusivity of SoHo House to create a female-focused space in New York. The Wing now has over 6,000 members across New York, D.C. and San Francisco and is set to expand to Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, London, Toronto and Paris in 2019.
“The Wing’s mission is the advancement of women through community, and we could not be more excited to partner with such a powerful community of women who lead their fields in tech, Hollywood, policy and sports,” said Gelman. “This round is proof positive that women can be on both sides of the table. This investment will enable us to further The Wing’s mission and scale to new heights both offline and online.”
In addition to its co-working facilities, The Wing has also launched magazine and podcast No Man’s Land and hosts regular events.
