Kevin Smith has caught a serious case of sequel-itis.
The director confirmed to radio show Rock102 Mornings with Shmonty & Carolina that a follow-up to his 1995 comedy Mallrats is currently in the works.
“Yeah, that’s what we’re working on,” Smith said of rumors that the sequel was happening. “It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”

“Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?’ ” he continued. “Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”
Smith, who is about to start shooting a third Clerks movie, added about returning to the Mallrats world: “I had a cool idea and a bunch of investors that were like, ‘Do it!’ so here we are, man.”
Smith first hinted at the Mallrats sequel Thursday on Twitter by writing, “I smell a rat.” He pointed out that he would shoot the project after Clerks III, hockey comedy Hit Somebody and horror movie Moose Jaws. He recently wrapped filming on Yoga Hosers, starring Johnny Depp and Justin Long.
Mallrats, which was written and directed by Smith, stars Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Jason Lee and Claire Forlani in the story of two guys who seek solace in a mall after they’re jilted by their girlfriends. The original film grossed $2.1 million at the box office.
Smith’s tweet can be seen below.
We shoot CLERKS III in May. HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in Feb 2016, we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat…
