House of Cards‘ Kevin Spacey took home the award for best actor in a drama series at the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday evening.
“I would first like to thank our creator. No, not that one. The one grounded here on Earth,” Spacey said about the show’s creator, Beau Willimon, in his acceptance speech before thanking the House of Cards cast, Netflix and his manager. “Beau Willimon, you have been an extraordinary collaborator, a remarkable challenge. I’ve loved every second that we have tussled and fought and argued these four seasons, and we will do our best to honor what you have started with House of Cards. We wish you the very, very best.”
The Hollywood Reporter learned Jan. 28 that creator-showrunner Willimon is exiting his post on the show, the same day the program’s fifth season renewal was announced.
Spacey wrapped his acceptance speech by addressing his new position as Relativity studio chief. “I just want to talk a little bit about the theory of Relativity. Because apparently, they say, that if you’re in an elevator, you don’t know whether you’re going up or going down. But right now, it feels like I’m going up. Thank you very much.”
Backstage, when asked about Willimon’s recent departure, Spacey struggled with his response. “It’s a great question. I have no f—king idea how to answer you,” he told the reporter. “I mean, literally. We haven’t made any decisions about who might come in. There are a tremendous amount of discussions and work to be had. And as I said tonight — and I meant it — I wish Beau all the best. He’s worked tirelessly for four seasons. Whatever he is going to go on to, he’s going to continue to show extraordinary range as a writer and understanding of the human condition. I hope that he and I will work together again some day. But it’s incredibly early for me to be even vaguely talking about what I think will happen or what we’ll try to make happen, but we will without question do our best to honor the road that Beau paved.”
The House of Cards actor was nominated alongside Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul). Priyanka Chopra and Pedro Pascal presented the award to Spacey.
The SAG Awards, which annually honor achievements in film and television, were held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
