“The work of Dawn Baillie and Frank W. Ockenfels 3 exemplifies the key role that original and inspired imagery plays in keeping millions of fans connected to the entertainment industry,” THR editorial director Janice Min said. “We are proud to present Dawn with the first-ever Saul Bass Award and to name Frank this year’s Honorary Key Art Award Recipient.”
The Saul Bass Award, which recognizes talented creatives who demonstrate iconic and influential style, was inspired by the work of Saul Bass, who is considered by today’s creative community to be one of the most iconic and influential graphic designers and filmmakers of the 20th century. His work is easily recognized and has influenced multiple generations of designers, film students and directors alike. During his 40-year career, he worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
Baillie, the first recipient of the award, is one of the three founding partners of BLT Communications. She has been responsible for creating some of film’s most iconic designs, such as promotional imagery for films like The Silence of the Lambs, Out of Sight, The Truman Show (final one-sheet), Moneyball, True Grit, Natural Born Killers, Zoolander, Babel, Chicago, Sleepless in Seattle and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Ockenfels, the Honorary Key Art Award recipient, has photographed movie posters for films including The Social Network, Men in Black 3, Harry Potter, The Amazing Spiderman, The Chronicles of Riddick and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. In addition, Ockenfels has done album covers and press shoots for musicians like David Bowie, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, Wilco, No Doubt, The Strokes and Norah Jones, and has shot TV advertising campaigns for every major network.
