Given that Pharrell recently faced backlash for wearing a Native American headdress on the July cover of Elle UK, one would assume that other famous faces would know better than to use a cultural item as a costume piece. But no. In fact, Khloe Kardashian opted to wear a feathered headpiece and share it on Instagram this past weekend.
The reality star posted an image of herself in a Native American headdress, with the caption reading, “Ray of clouds. Chirping of birds. Gurgling of water. Granting desire. One with water.” Yeah, we don’t know what she’s talking about either.
The controversial photo was taken Saturday during Kimye’s music festival-themed birthday party — otherwise called “Kidchella” — for their one-year-old daughter, North West. Kardashian’s younger sister Kylie Jenner also posted a close-up shot of her in the decorative headpiece on Instagram.
Not only has the TV personality received criticism from fans, but the Native American Council also has expressed its frustration in a interview with Page Six on Monday.
“It’s terrible,” said Cliff Matias, cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, upon seeing the photo. “It’s absolutely terrible that they have no conscience to discontinue to do such things. I just can’t believe she would be that insensitive to think it was OK to wear that war bonnet at a kids’ party.… Now you have a celebrity at a kids’ party creating a whole new generation of insensitive thinking.”
