Khloe Kardashian‘s offshore midnight fireworks display on Tuesday night left Venice and Marina del Rey residents alternately annoyed and enraged.
Kardashian was playing hostess at a blowout bash to celebrate the birthday of her new boyfriend, NBA star James Harden, according to People. The usual suspects — Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West, Kylie Jenner and Tyga — were in attendance aboard the yacht in Marina del Rey, California. The fireworks display began at midnight and lasted fifteen minutes, TMZ reports.
Many local residents, including some irritated celebrities, were less than thrilled at the display, taking to Twitter to vent their annoyance.

Josh Gad tweeted: “To whomever planned fireworks at midnight on a Tues thank u. Sincerely parents of 2 children who just woke up thinking we were being shelled.” Rebecca Black added on Twitter: “who on earth in the los angeles areadecided it’d be a good idea to set off FIREWORKS AT MIDNIGHT IM TRYING TO SLEEP.”
The Coast Guard wasn’t pleased either. When reached for comment by THR, petty officer Andrea Anderson said that while the agency had not issued an official permit, they had issued a “Letter of Recommendation” for the Kardashian fireworks display the night of the party.
According to Anderson, the letter does not authorize for any particular time and place, only declares that the proposed event does not endanger surrounding marinas, vessels or bystanders. Anderson also said that officials from the fire department “had boarded the boat the evening of the party” to complete a safety checklist, but she could not speak to the nature of the permit obtained or if there was one issued. “It all came together very quickly last night,” she added.
L.A. County Fire Dept., which is the agency responsible for issuing firework permits in Marina Del Rey, did not yet respond to a request for comment.
