UPDATE: After our story broke, Fox Searchlight sent out a start of production release stating that filming on the movie began Monday — and that Debra Winger and Bill Pullman have joined the cast.
Joel Kinnaman, star of AMC’s The Killing, has nabbed a lead in Lola Versus, Fox Searchlight’s romantic comedy being produced by Michael London’s Groundswell Productions.
Also coming on board the project is Hamish Linklater.
The low-budget pic, being directed by Daryl Wein, who co-wrote the script with Zoe Lister-Jones, follows a woman who is dumped just weeks before her wedding and embarks on a series of encounters ranging from the horrible to the embarrassing to the enlightening as she navigates life as a single woman.
Greta Gerwig stars as the title character while Jones is her best friend, a struggling New York theatre actress.
Kinnaman will play the tattooed artist that breaks off the wedding to Lola and breaks her heart.
Linklater plays Lola’s male best friend, a cute menschy musician who’s always had a crush on her.
Production begins later this month in New York.
Kinnaman is a Swedish actor who caught the attention of Hollywood with his work in the acclaimed Swedish thriller Snabba cash (Easy Money). That led to Kininaman being signed by UTA and Magnolia Entertainment, who got him cast as the co-lead in The Killing, which proved a hit with critics and audiences and was renewed for a second season earlier Monday.
Kinnaman’s role in Lola Versus isn’t his first American feature snag. It follows last month’s casting in Safe House, Universal’s thriller starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. The movie reteams Kinnaman with his Snabba cash director Daniel Espinosa.
Linklater, repped by ICM and the Coronel Group, may be best known for appearing in TV’s The New Adventures of Old Christine and will appear in Universal’s big-budget tentpole, Battleship.
