SEOUL – The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has announced a list of nine South Korean films that will be considered for this year’s foreign-language Oscar.
Titles include a broad range of genres, including some of the year’s most successful films such as inter-Korean spy actioner The Berlin File, fantasy teen romance A Werewolf Boy, Sundance-winning Jiseul, as well as thriller A Terror Live, which is currently performing well at the local box office.
Other Oscar entry hopefuls are critically acclaimed titles, including crime drama Montage, historical drama National Security 1985, and melodrama Mai Ratima. Last but not least on the list is The Face Reader, a period piece starring Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer) that is due in theaters in September.
To be qualified for consideration, a given film needs to have been released for seven consecutive days between Oct. 1, 2012, and Sept. 30, 2013. It must also be in a predominantly non-English-language release, which has ruled out Bong Joon-ho’s English-language debut, Snowpiercer.
A committee of five judges will cast votes to pick one official submission for the best foreign-language film category of the Oscars.
The 86th Academy Awards will take place March 2.
