Early in her career, Kristen Stewart’s normal attire was jeans, a T-shirt and Converse sneakers.
In an interview in the July issue of Vanity Fair, she tells Ingrid Sischy, “Look at a picture of me before I was 15, I am a boy. I wore my brother’s clothes, dude! Not like I cared that much, but I remember being made fun of because I wasn’t wearing Juicy jeans. I didn’t even think about it. I wore my gym clothes.”
And her grooming wasn’t up to snuff either.
‘I remember this girl in sixth grade looked at me in gym and was like, “Oh my God! That’s disgusting — you don’t shave your legs!”
But 22-year-old face of Balenciaga has finally fallen in love with fashion. And some of the romance clearly was sparked by the couture-laden VF photo spread, shot on location in Paris by Mario Testino, that appears in the issue.
The star of Snow White and the Huntsman admits that she’s enjoying her high fashion profile and tells Sischy “I love getting really cool shit!” — and it shows. In the past year, Kristen’s evolving style has grown more confident as she walked red carpets wearing Balenciaga, Chanel, J Mendel and Roberto Cavalli.
In April, Glamour named Kristen the most fashionable woman of the year, praising her growth from “awkward teen to style queen” and declaring that she is always “effortlessly on-trend.”
But there is style scrutiny about her poses that rubs Stewart the wrong way. “I have been criticized a lot for not looking perfect in every photograph,” Kristen admits. “I get some serious shit about it. I’m not embarrassed about it. I’m proud of it. If I took perfect pictures all the time, the people standing in the room with me, or on the carpet, would think, What an actress! What a faker!”
“That thought embarrasses me so much that I look like sh-t in half my photos, and I don’t give a f–k,” she continues. “What matters to me is that the people in the room leave and say, ‘She was cool. She had a good time. She was honest.’ I don’t care about the voracious, starving shit eaters who want to turn truth into shit. Not that you can say that in Vanity Fair!”
Well, turns out they can and did say that in VF.
